Michael Jackson’s Children Win Rights to Sell $600M of Father’s Catalog to Sony

The California appeals court has given Michael Jackson’s estate the green light to sell his incredible $600 million catalog to Sony Music.

It may serve as a win for Michael’s children but it’s certainly not what Michael’s mom, Katherine Jackson, wanted for her son’s music. According to Billboard, mother Jackson was trying to block the deal, but a month after the court hinted they’d rule against her, they recently made it official. The court said that the executors of Michael’s estate, John Branca and John McClain, were within their rights to make this deal. Reportedly, Michael’s will gave them broad powers to sell pretty much anything in the estate, and this huge catalog was no exception.

The court ruled that, “the will gave the executors broad powers of sale, with no exception for the specific assets at issue in this case.” So what does this mean for Michael’s music and for fans? Well, Sony now holds the masters rights to specific recording which they can use to rerelease old music and release NEW MUSIC that Michale may have recorded but never released. They can pretty much do whatever they want. We’ll shall wait and see. In the mean time, we can Remember the Time when we fell in love with the King of Pop by listening to his many classic hits.
